If you’ve been with us for a while, you’ll notice that each year around this time, we have a cute little visitor to our site:
It’s our friend, Sunbonnet Sue, and she has the very important job of decorating the tree each year! She holds a special place in our hearts here at EQ and I thought I’d share a little bit about her story today.
Penny McMorris & Dean Neumann, EQ founders
The Sunbonnet Sue animation was created by Dean Neumann, EQ co-founder and programmer. She made her first appearance on our site back in 1996, shortly after our first website was launched. EQ3 was our current version of the software at that time.
EQ3 could only export PCX files (PiCture eXchange) for images. Dean made the animation by drawing individual blocks on the Block Worktable for each of the movements. He exported a PCX for each block and then “stitched” those image files together to create the animation.
We’re sharing the Holiday Sunbonnet Sue block with all of our users again this year! Click here to download the Holiday Sunbonnet Sue EQ8 project file. The project includes the original block design, and a new quilt design featuring the block.
Happy holidays from all of us here at The Electric Quilt Company!

I love the wallhanging and the back story but I think there is a problem with the project. The block shown in the project doesn’t appear to be the block that the top the outside area is made from. It’s diamonds rather than rectangles/triangles. I can redraw but when I saw it an idea for a different center popped into my mind so I went to use the project. EQ rocks! Best, beth

Hi Beth,
It sounds like you’re looking at the Blocks section of the Sketchbook. If you click the Quilts section and then edit the quilt to the worktable, you’ll see the same quilt as pictured in this post.

I am NEW to any EQ. I HAVE purchased everything I need to get started except EQ8 itself! I am in need of surgery
and I want to take my computers in to Best Buy to the Geek Squad to be sure it’s set up correctly to accept the program. I look forward to getting started! The program sounds phenomenal! Thank you!
