Hello and welcome to my stop on the 100 Blocks Blog Tour! This is my first 100 Blocks issue and I’m so excited to be a part of the fun! My block even made the cover:
Here it is a little closer, #825 Starry Path Redux:
When I started thinking about designing a block for the magazine, I went to the EQ7 Block Library to look for inspiration. A block called Starry Path caught my eye:
(Now you know where the name came from!)
EQ7 has a fun feature called Serendipity that allows you to create new blocks without drawing. The feature uses blocks you’ve saved in the Sketchbook as a starting point to create new block designs. There are 7 Serendipity tools to choose from: Frame Block, Tilt Block, Merge Blocks, Clip & Flip Block, Shrink & Flip Block, Kaleidoscope Block, and Fancy Star Block. There are lots of options within each tool, so the possibilities for new blocks seem endless!
My Starry Path Redux block is a result of using the Clip & Flip Block tool. Here are some of the other possibilities created with Starry Path + Clip & Flip:
And here are some more designs using the same Starry Path block and the other Serendipity tools:
So many designs and they all start from the same block!
Thanks for visiting during the Blog Tour! I’ll be starting a new EQ7 Jump Start Sew Along here on our blog on May 5th (click here for more details). I hope you’ll join in the fun!
Leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite quilting gadget is to be entered in the 100 Blocks Vol. 9 magazine giveaway. And check out Quiltmaker’s blog each day to see the other stops on the 100 Blocks Blog Tour!
*You must comment by 11:59 pm EST on Thursday May 1, 2014 to be entered in the giveaway. One winner will be chosen at random.*

What a beautiful block. Congratulations.
My favourite quilting tool is my cutting gear. Of course, that’s not strictly speaking one tool, but several: mat, rotary cutter and rulers, but you can’t use one without the others!
04-28-2014
8:22 am
My favorite tool is also a rotary cutter. When I first started quilting, I had to trace my pattern and cut out with scissors. It took so much time to do that. Your block is wonderful! Thanks for a chance to win a copy of the magazine.

I feel lost when I use another machine and don’t have that light. Second favorite has to be a rotary cutter–not sure how all that cutting would get done without it! Thanks for sharing your block and for the give-away!

My computer is my favorite tool. Inspiration is EVERYWHERE and I can visit all of those places ANY TIME I WANT even if my hair is a mess or I can’t find my favorite shoes. I have dozens of folders filled to the brim with links lists and pictures. They prod me to get out my graph paper and colored pencils and make something–even if only on paper! One of these days I am going to have o break down and get EQ7. Your block has so many iterations that would take me an afternoon to coordinate and you can do that with just a click.

Such an interesting block – so many possibilites to play with.. Congradulation on getting in the magazine…
I don’t have EQ7 so some graph paper and pencils to map out something you see or an idea you run across on line – of course one of the best new gadgets is the rotary cutter – what a time saver – but still nice to occassionally cut things out wit scissors…

My favorite tools are my mid-sixties Japanese import Kenmore sewing machines. They are built like tanks! I even found I could do fmq waves/diagonal geometric shapes (nothing too fancy – I’m new)without dropping the feed dogs or using a special foot. They are all metal and can sew through 8 layers of denim (not sure I need to ever do that but you never know). Thanks for the opportunity!

04-28-2014

04-28-2014
4:18 pm
Like many who have commented, my rotary cutter is a prized tool, but I’m also a scissor fanatic and have more pairs that I want to count. My favorite thing to do with my little scissors I use to cut threads while I actually sew at a machine is to use a nametag clip with a retractable string to hold them. This way I always know where my scissors are, and it is especially handy when machine quilting because the quilt is taking up all the flat space with no room left to lay down the scissors. The nametag clips can be found in packages of six in the office supply section of major discount stores. So no big deal if one breaks and also plenty to share with friends.
04-28-2014
4:19 pm
My favorite gadget would have to be my large size rotary cutter, especially if I am cutting several layers at a time.

Thank you for the Serendipity tips! Must play around with that! Favorite gadget is now “The Gypsy Gizmo”. It’s a purple plastic thingamabob that stands up with a razor blade in the top. When you are chain piecing you never have to touch your scissors or use the blade built into your machine again. Just hold your pieced parts over it, pull down, and the razor cuts the thread. I can no longer be without it. Thank you for the opportunity to win!
04-28-2014

I have two favorite quilting gadgets. The first is my magnetic pin holder. It was one of those things that when I started using it, I was pretty sure I wasted my money. Now I find it difficult to use a “regular” pincushion. The other useful gadget is my stiletto. It’s great for manipulating fabric really close to the presser foot to make everybody behave!
04-28-2014
5:53 pm
I am new to quilting and do not have many “gadgets”, but I do really like the roll cutter waaaayyyy more than trying to use scissors. Thanks for the beautiful block and for the giveaway.

I’ve been using EQ since v1, and wouldn’t be without it! Next to my tweezers, I think EQ7 is my favorite quilting tool – it really helps me figure out fabric placement BEFORE I cut, avoiding many of those “WHAT was I thinking?” moments!
04-28-2014

I really like how this pinwheel spins, but not in the typical 2 options you see with pinwheels. I don’t know if EQ is considered a gadget, but if so, it’s my favorite because it enables the dreaming and creativity to just flow, flow, flow.
04-29-2014
7:27 am
EQ7 has to be considered a gadget. I use that with almost every quilt I make, playing with layout and colors.

Well I think my rotary cutter along with a good ruler (this is read as: one that is not missing chunks sliced off. I am one who does not use a lot of gadgets. I am sure some of them would make my quilting easier but….. I haven’t acquired the taste yet.
04-29-2014
1:04 pm
My favorite gadget is not really aimed toward sewing or quilting. It is painter’s tape. I love it because I can find the accurate 1/4 inch and mark it, you can use it to mark the 1/4 inch way out past the throat plates so you do not have to mark HST, and if you need to make it a scant quarter inch you can move the tape. Also since I sew on vintage machines it does not take the paint off.
04-29-2014
2:16 pm
I have many gadgets but, the one which would be the most difficult to do without would be my rotary cutter. If I had to cut each piece using scissors I would never get anything finished.

After having sewed for years on a machine sitting on a tabletop, I think my favorite gadget is a sewing table with a recessed area for my machine. It makes the height so much better and it keeps the fabric level with the machine so it doesn’t pull itself.
