This little wall hanging was inspired by a guild challenge to use an Accuquilt birdie die. I almost immediately thought of cardinals sitting on a brach watching large snow flakes fall. As I started to work with the quilt I couldn’t do a simple one color bird and drew a life-like cardinal. Then he needed a little friend, so I drew the chickadee. I did follow my own instructions until I realized the branches needed more detail and I free hand embroidered the smaller twigs. The large snowflake was a challenge with the busy confetti background. I chose the Hoffman fabric because it looked like a snowy sky, but so many things didn’t snow, I embroidered with Superiors Razzle and embellished with crystal beads. When I hung it, the snowflake totally disappeared into the background. A shopping trip to Etsy for some buttons and a hand crocheted snowflake solved the problems. My advise is to always take all aspects of the quilt into consideration when picking the background!
