The Electric Quilt Company’s Story – How It All Began
We’re celebrating 30 years! Since the pearl is the traditional symbol for 30 years, we’re sharing EQ Pearls of Wisdom from our friends! See all Pearls of Wisdom posts. We hope you enjoy the tips and tricks you learn along the way and discover some new quilters or catch up with your favorites! Also, we’d love to hear about YOUR journey with EQ so feel free to tell us your story in the comments on any post! A big THANK YOU to all our customers for your support over the years. We’re looking forward to many more!
This week’s featured friend: Wendy Sheppard!
A bit about Wendy!
Wendy Sheppard is originally from southeast Asia. She came to the United States for her tertiary education. With degrees in Chemical Engineering and years later, she now lives with her family in northern Virginia. An entirely happenstance quilter in that she had never even touched a sewing machine until she was in her early 30’s, she enjoys the different aspects of quilting. The many quilty hats she wears include: pattern designer, teacher, author and presenter.
Her work has been published in many US quilting publications, as well as in Australia, the UK and France. To date, she has authored four quilting books, including two award-winning. Wendy also teaches online domestic machine quilting classes for Annie’s. She is also an Aurifil designer, who has curated multiple thread collections for Aurifil. When her schedule allows, she travels to connect with other quilters by speaking to groups and teaching. In her down time, she loves to work on hand projects (smocking, cross stitching and hand applique) and is novice rose gardener who bumbles around in her flower bed.
When did you start using Electric Quilt and how has it changed your quilting life?
I started using EQ in 2010 when I needed a visual way to work out the designs that were floating around in my mind. I now design all my quilts (for magazines & various design projects for fabric companies, as well as designs for my own quilt pattern line) in EQ.
What is your EQ “Pearl of Wisdom” for EQ users?
If you want to see if something you design would be FQ Friendly, don’t forget to check the “Fat Quarters Only” box before you preview/print the yardages. This is one of the most straightforward tools in EQ in gauging to see if a design is FQ Friendly.

So pleased that you are featuring Wendy Sheppard. She is one of my favorite quilt designers and I follow her blog and Instagram accounts. I had no idea that she uses EQ to design her quilt patterns… motivates me to develop more skills with EQ8.

Took a workshop from Wendy Sheppard in Cumming, Ga a few years ago and was so inspired and impressed with her teaching and her quilts, I have been following her ever since. Every time she announces a new pattern, I run out and buy the magazine in which it appears. I have never considered using or buying EQ. Maybe, I will give it a look. Wendy is my favorite designer in the quilting world!
