The Electric Quilt Company’s Story – How It All Began
We’re celebrating 30 years! Since the pearl is the traditional symbol for 30 years, we’re sharing EQ Pearls of Wisdom from our friends! See all Pearls of Wisdom posts. We hope you enjoy the tips and tricks you learn along the way and discover some new quilters or catch up with your favorites! Also, we’d love to hear about YOUR journey with EQ so feel free to tell us your story in the comments on any post! A big THANK YOU to all our customers for your support over the years. We’re looking forward to many more!
This week’s featured friend: Cheryl Brickey!
Tell us a bit about yourself Cheryl!
Hi, I’m Cheryl Brickey of Meadow Mist Designs. I am a chemical engineer and live in South Carolina with my husband, two kids, and three crazy cats. I enjoy all aspects of quilting, especially designing quilt patterns and quilt math. I created my pattern company to combine my technical background and love of quilting and deliver beautiful and classic quilt patterns.
I am the author of the Modern Plus Sign Quilts book (Stash 2018) and the newly released Just One Charm Pack Quilts book (Stash 2021) and have had my work published in major quilt magazines and shown in international quilt shows.
I love meeting and teaching other quilters and am very active in both my local modern quilt guild (Greenville Modern Quilt Guild) and online through my blog Meadow Mist Designs. You can also find me hanging out on social media as @MeadowMistDesigns on Instagram and Facebook.
When did you start using Electric Quilt and how has it changed your quilting life?
I started using EQ7 about 10 years ago when I was a new quilter and designer. Being an engineer, I really like to plan out my quilts before starting them. With EQ8, I can try out an infinite number of fabrics and color combinations as well as changing the blocks, layouts, and sizes. I know what my quilt is going to look like and that I will be happy with it before making the first cut into my fabric. I design almost every single one of my quilts in EQ8.
This is Pop Rocks (shown below) which was juried into QuiltCon 2018 in the Michael Miller Challenge Fabric category. I was able to import the Michael Miller fabrics and design the quilt, playing with many different quilt designs, layouts, and fabric placements until it felt just right.
What is your EQ “Pearl of Wisdom” for EQ users?
EQ8 was invaluable when designing the quilts for my new book that just published last month called Just One Charm Pack Quilts. I wrote the book to help get my single charm packs out from my stash and into finished quilts. Each of the 18 patterns of the book uses a charm pack, an additional fabric, and a background fabric (and each pattern is made in two different colorways).
All of the patterns in the book were created in EQ8 which allowed me to play with the designs and figure out all of the different colorways. EQ8 made it easy to import the different charm pack print images to be able to pick out 36 different charm packs and their supporting fabrics for all of the quilts in the book.
I love comparing the finished quilts to the EQ8 renderings. Here is the EQ8 rendering of (on the left) and the finished quilt (on the right) of the book quilt Cozy Cottages.
Here is the EQ8 rendering of (on the left) and the finished quilt (on the right) of the book quilt Ninja.
What are you up to now and what do you have coming up?
You can find my book Just One Charm Pack Quilts on Amazon or get signed copy in my pattern shop.
I also kicked off my seventh annual mystery quilt called the Macaron Mystery (which I also designed in EQ8). This is a free monthly mystery quilt (with a non-mystery sneak peek option) that is prefect for all quilter levels. You find all of the information and join in with hundreds of other quilters at the Macaron Mystery Page.
