The Electric Quilt Company’s Story – How It All Began
We’re celebrating 30 years! Since the pearl is the traditional symbol for 30 years, we’re sharing EQ Pearls of Wisdom from our friends! See all Pearls of Wisdom posts. We hope you enjoy the tips and tricks you learn along the way and discover some new quilters or catch up with your favorites! Also, we’d love to hear about YOUR journey with EQ so feel free to tell us your story in the comments on any post! A big THANK YOU to all our customers for your support over the years. We’re looking forward to many more!
This week’s featured friend: Nancy Mahoney!
Tell us a bit about yourself Nancy!
I have enjoyed making quilts for over 35 years, during which time my beautiful quilts have been featured in over 250 quilt magazines. I have also created over 100 quilt patterns for a variety of fabric manufacturers. I have authored 14 books since 2002; my most recent book is Learn to Paper Piece. When I’m not designing and making quilts, I travel around the country, sharing my quilts, teaching piecing and machine appliqué techniques, and visiting gardens.
When did you start using Electric Quilt and how has it changed your quilting life?
Little did I know when I started using EQ3, that Electric Quilt would play an important role in my career as an author, teacher, and quilt designer. I went from designing quilts using graph paper and colored pencils to using Electric Quilt and have never looked back. I use EQ every step of the way, from concept to finished product, whether it’s for a book, magazine, individual pattern, or class handout.
What is your EQ “Pearl of Wisdom” for EQ users?
One of my favorite tools is Symmetry on the Quilt Worktable. Symmetry is a fun way to see various quilt designs. With a single click, all of the blocks flip and rotate to create unique designs.
What are you up to now and what do you have coming up?
I’m working on new patterns that will be available in my Etsy shop. My new book, A New Twist, will be released in March 2022. See more of my quilts on my website. Follow me on Facebook, Nancy Mahoney Designs, and on Instagram, @nancymahoneydesigns.

I started with Eq 5 but did not really get started until EQ7. I needed to move all my furniture into one room to allow for empty floors for refinishing of hardwood. I measured each piece and used custom set to place in the kitchen measurement. Worked like a charm. I was able to make use of every inch, leaving a path to get from one end to the other, and maneuver the furniture to get it in an out. Then I really got into learning the program and designing my own quilts.

I began using EQ in Ernest with EQ5. I had been playing around with asymmetrical blocks for some time and was encouraged by many friends to write a book. My first book uses an EQ block called Bouquet with some changes. The second book uses a block called Tilted Triangle. I even designed plastic templates for this one. Like Nancy I find the Symmetry tool extremely helpful.I love EQ and what it has done for my designing! On to the next book.

I love your quilts Nancy. I may not have all your books, but certainly a great number of them. Thank you for the free quilt design.

Thank you Electric Quilt and Nancy for sharing this. I upgraded to EQ8 during the Memorial Day sale and this is now the first quilt in my Sketchbook!
