EQ User, Karen Boss recently reached out to us with a great story taking place right here in little Bowling Green, Ohio. Many of you may have heard of the non-profit organization, Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) and its many hospitals and fundraisers. One of those fundraisers is Dance Marathon and our local college, Bowling Green State University, hosts one of these every year. It’s a 24-hour dance event called Ziggython where students are sponsored by friends, family and members of the community to raise money for every hour they remain dancing.
Recently, Karen became involved with Children’s Miracle Network and was acquainted with Marissa English, a young girl who lives in Bowling Green and has special needs. Using EQ7, Marissa and Karen designed a quilt to donate to CMN and it was auctioned off at Dance Marathon last year. The quilt raised much more money than Karen had expected!
Karen’s story:
“Over the summer of 2014 I went over [to visit Marissa] with my laptop, which is a touch screen. Before going over the first time, I put a few simple layouts, in the sketchbook as well as some simple blocks. We had decided to do it in BG colors [orange and brown]. She picked out the blocks that she liked and showed me where on the quilt she wanted them to go. So we came up with a design that we both liked, I only tweaked it a little.
I made the quilt and it was auctioned at the Dance Marathon at BG in April [2015]. My actual cost was around $400.00 to make the quilt, I thought that I would be happy if they just broke even with what I put into it. The quilting of the 3 layers together was done by Lisa Spaulding at The Quilt Foundry in Maumee, where I also took my first quilting class as well.
The quilt was auctioned off and raised $1,450.00, I was truly shocked, but very happy for CMN. We decided to do another quilt for Dance Marathon 2016. If you want to see it, come to the Dance Marathon in 2016 and support the kids and CMN!!!”
Karen and Marissa’s new quilt will be auctioned off at BGSU’s Dance Marathon on Sunday, April 3rd!
