02-10-2016
10:50 am
I like geometric prints and bright primary colors, but I also like the history of fabric design thanks to Barbara Brackman’s blog, Civil War Quilts. No matter the type of fabric – modern or reproduction – there’s something for me to love! So, what’s in my stash? Red and blue 1930s prints, Lotta Jansdotter’s Mormor line, a lot of Denyse Schmidt (especially her Hadley line), bright Civil War reproductions (I’m a fan of Paula Barnes since she’s a local designer), Kate Spain, Cotton + Steel (especially the Basics), Carolyn Friedlander’s Architextures prints, some special Art Gallery pieces from Katarina Rochella, Bonnie Christine, and April Rhodes, and a whole bunch of American Made Brand solids.

I’ve been drawn to florals but mostly to the size of the design and colors. No one favorite designer as I like them all and they all are so different. That is why I love quilting so much, you never get bored with the same thing/design/color. The same pattern always looks different because the person making the quilt has her own likes and dislikes.
02-10-2016

12:07 pm
Over the last 10 years, I’ve been swinging more and more to non-traditional fabrics – batiks, textures, small prints (since I do hand applique), but always with a semi-geometrical design. Now that ‘modern’ prints and designs are in style, I’m drawn to them – loving all that white open space for quilting and ‘freshness’. As for designers – the new ones that are upcoming – but NO primitive/traditional stuff. Been there long time a go – and don’t want to go back!
02-10-2016
12:07 pm
My favorite fabrics are florals but I’m flexible on that account. I have a large collection of striped fabrics and dots. And an entire bin labeled “strange”. This is an evolving industry and I love the imagination and huge variety of shades & tones of fabrics. There is something that will capture everyone’s eye and place in life they happen to be in at that moment. My one rule I follow is purchase quality.

I haven’t met a fabric yet that I didn’t love, or at the very least, like. My choices depend upon the project at hand. For kids quilts, I lean more toward using bright, bold prints, whereas if I were making something for myself (rarely happens), I’d look more at the soft, muted, small prints. Love geometric patterns regardless of the color/hue. Don’t really have a favorite designer. When I’m shopping for fabric, I just find what catches my eye and buy a bunch from that particular line to have on hand for whatever project I choose to use it in. Recently been looking at some of Pat Sloane’s fabrics, but again, no real favorite for me. I like an eclectic mix.

I’m afraid I’m a bit of a fabric butterfly with very eclectic taste, but my absolute favourites are Joanna Figueroa from Fig Tree & Co. and Bonnie & Camille, each of these designers seem to produce designs with a fresh vintage/modern kind of theme. I also adore the more modern fabrics designed by Vanessa Christenson from V&Co. and Kate Spain. I find the simplicity of Lotta Jansdotter’s designs very appealing, along with the retro feel of Charlie Harper’s to name but a few. But if I want to go bright I have to say Kaffe Fassett, Amy Butler and Tula Pink are the ones for me. However, if we’re talking batiks they have to be the deep bright jewel colours, like some of the Bali Pops by Hoffman, especially turquoise and jade. As for Christmas fabrics…. I’m totally in love with the timeless design line Scandi II by Makower UK. Ahh, fabric heaven………….

I like reproduction colors of fabrics because I sew a lot for dolls and also the smaller the print on the fabric the better. Truth be told I never really thought about who designed the fabric I just know what I like, so I went to my stash and checked. Almost all of my fabric is Judie Rothermel of Marcus Fabric and Jo Morton of Andover, so I would say they are my favorites!

I am a long time collector of batiks. I purchase more Indonesian batiks because I love the high thread count fabric. Cherrywood Fabrics have gained my interest also. Such beautiful depth of color and texture. You go, Carla!

I like sports themed fabrics and holiday fabrics, especially Christmas fabrics.
I like the way Ricky Tims does the one of a kind dyed fabrics and how a design can unfold because the colors change within one piece of fabric. Really neat.

Because I make mainly photo memory quilts, I like subtle fabrics (solids, tonals) so as not to detract from the main focus of the quilts, the photos. Jinny Beyer fabrics are a personal favorite when I get a chance to make something for myself.

I have a hard time picking any favorite fabric – with so many varieties, you’re bound to find something to inspire you! My quilting moods swing on such a wide pendulum- soft, bright, muted, patterned, solid. Your charm packs were my first purchases as a beginning quilter a number of years ago, and I was giddy with the creative choices available. The same goes with the fabulous designers who go above and beyond to create designs to fit any mood – many of them working out of their homes while raising families of their own. The FQS has a wonderful selection, fast shipping, and affordable prices, thank you!

First I would like to Thank the Fat Quarter Shop for having this give away when so many local quilt shops
Are closing. As for my favorite fabrics that would have to be Civil War Reproductions , I feel that they are timeless. That being said I am in love with all fabrics (hahaha). As for my favorite designer that most likely would be Pam Buda-Barbara Brackman-Judie Rothermel. Yeah, that would be the ONE. Happy Quilting!
