We’ve partnered with Island Batik to bring you a quilt design challenge featuring the Quilted in Honor fabric collection by Kathy Engle for Island Batik. The Quilted in Honor fabric collection was created to benefit Operation Homefront. You can read more about the Quilted in Honor project by clicking here.

Here’s a quick recap of the rules:

You must design your quilt using Electric Quilt 7 (EQ7) design software.
The quilt design must be colored with Quilted in Honor fabrics ONLY! (Download the fabrics here. The QIH fabrics are part of the October – July 2014 fabric library.)
Three design categories to choose from: Pieced, Appliqué, or Combination (pieced + appliqué)
Any size!
No sewing required. The “virtual” EQ7 quilt design is all that’s needed to enter.
One entry per person

Submission Guidelines

Scroll down to the comment form at the end of this post. Fill in your info and make sure you select an image for your comment (this will be the image of your quilt). The link up will be open until Friday, October 3 at 5pm EST. Winner will be announced shortly after.

Judging

Winners will be chosen by special guest judges Annie Unrein and Pat Sloan.

Prizes

One winner will be chosen from each of the three categories (Pieced, Appliqué, and Combination)

If your quilt makes the top 50 best designs, we will ask you to send us the project file. These will be available for all users as free EQ7 project downloads on DoYouEQ.com!

Each winner will receive:

  If you are new to EQ7 I cannot recommend enough the “EQ With Me: Pieced Drawing” book. It was previously called “Pieced Drawing” in case you come across it online. I bought it from a bookstore for $4.00. Most of those copies are gone. There are things in this book that are not in the User Manual. I went through it and jotted down a note and page number of the things that I learned that I knew that I would use. The the “EQ With Me: Pieced Drawing” spiral bound book is for sale at this website under “Books.” There is an applique book too.

I have named this quilt “Hero Star”. I made this for the Quilt of Valor organization and donated it in January, 2014. It was designed improvisationally and after pictures of my finished Quilt of Valor went up online I had many requests for the pattern. I have changed it a little, and since there were no wide red/white/blue striped fabrics in the challenge fabrics, I decided on a pieced border to give the same effect and added more appliquéd stars.

Blessed Jets – I wanted to design a laptop quilt to Thank and Honor our brave Airmen & Women veterans. My second goal was to encourage new quilters, keeping it simple to sew by arranged very basic blocks for a lot of impact!
I think it would be a great project for those generous quilting groups who donate their time to veterans.

This was stretch for me because I am so used to working with bright children’s fabrics and this collection was primarily dark. So I focused on a light background and added a design that I felt had the illusion of twinkling stars. The Woven NYB Block is my original design.

The American Bald Eagle bearing a shield full of stars and stipes. What could be more emblematic of what our servicemen and women fight for than these? Liberty’s eagle is accompanied by fifty stars. 9 in the shield and five at his feet. Plus 16 stars on the corner stones of the striped border. The remining twenty come from the trapunto stars in the outer corners of the applique blocks and in the center of the stripe border. Additionally, the letters U S A are also trapunto.

This design is pieced and appliqued and is being quilted as you view my file. My quilting plan includes a close topo-meander fill around the eagle and his wreath. There is a 1/2 inch grid that sits behind the outer corners of the applique on a line that extends across and connects the center half-square triangles. This same line entends from the top of the center triangles up to the edge of the stripe border and is also filled with a 1/2″ grid. The corner stone stars our outlined and the background is filled with a very tight meander. The remaining stripe border is comprised of swirls and tiny pebbles. The tiny pebbles also fill a 1/4″ spacer bar between the grid and the free motion meanders. The outer border will have the words. Veteran”, “Patriotic”, and “Bravery” outlined and the remainder of the border will be done in the topo-meander to make the words stand out.
The batting is a single layer of cotton topped with a layer of wool to emshasize the quilting.

Forgot to add: My “Guardians at the Gate” is a King Size quilt, all made from one, 4 patch block, just turned different ways. It is deceptively easy.
