Valerie at re-engineered.blogspot.com made a beautiful quilt with split hexagons. What a great idea!
I made one in EQ7. You can download the file here.
Here is how I did it….
After playing around for a bit I decided just to make a long skinny block. Mine is 2 x 30.
I then started a Vertical Strip Quilt. I popped the blocks in and flipped every other one. Then I started playing around.
For this quilt I right clicked on a color then clicked Add Shades & Tints. It will add darker and lighter variations of the color you picked to the sketchbook.
Then, I clicked the Random Recolor tool.
Here is that same quilt after I clicked Random Recolor > Map to fabrics.
The first quilt after Random Recolor Tool > Shift Hue.
The first quilt and Random Recolor Tool > Randomize.
And of course you could make a Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt BUT without Y-seams

I like this! I am now more willing to try a quilt using hexagons. I will need to download the file into my EQ7 and give it a go. Thanks for the post!

You can change the blocks to be any size you want so, you can edit it to work for jelly rolls or whatever size fabric you’d like to use.

I love to paper piece and this is how I make my scrappy hexagons. I call it the “boat” shape when explaining it to people – floating and then capsized, next to each other in a line. I print out the boat template and draw spinning, thin triangles. These are about 7 inches across the block. The spikes use up a lot of scraps. I keep them by the sewing machine and make 2 halves when I have some scraps from a project. I have not been able to draft the inside of the half hexie in EQ7. I wish they would come out with a grid for hexie, like they have for circles and other shapes.
I assume you know that in the EQ6 piecing book, there is a few pages on drafting an isometric (60 degree) grid. This info is not in the owners manual. Thank you again for the project and information and the project. I will download it and try more ideas with hexies.

Sorry, should have said the spinning points radiate from the center, around the inside of the hexagon.

Thanks for the comments. Great additional information and ideas!
There is a hexagon layout if you go to Quilt > New Quilt > One Patch Quilt > and choose Hexagon under Patch Style.

This is awesome! I am very glad to have these tutorials so I can get better use from my program. When I try and do it myself it takes SO much longer! Thanks.
