I love to play in EQ6. I wanted to share yet another use for “BLOCK > Serendipity > Merge Blocks”.
If you start a new block in EasyDraw and draw this:
Then you can merge it with any other block in your Sketchbook to create a “Shadowed Block”. Set the new block in a Horizontal quilt with sashing, color it, and you’ll get this:
Happy EQ-ing!

Now that is neat! Thanks for showing us.

Also, if you want your piecing to end up nice, watch what size you draw the background block to be.
Let’s say the colored block is 6″, I would draw the background block to be 7″ and the shadow only an inch wide. That would keep rotary cutting set to nice numbers.

What a great way to set sampler blocks! I’m always on the lookout for new and unusual setting possibilities for block collections.
Your tip about sizing is well taken. Thanks.

I never noticed the merging capabilities, that is really cool! I agree about the proportion of the shadow to the block itself.
Can someone remind me how to not see the lines so I can better see the floating effect.
Thanks,
Susan

Right-click on the quilt and uncheck all the outline options.

That is really great. Some time ago I saw a quilt made of lots of different star blocks all of which were ‘shadowed’. I’ve often wondered how to do this in EQ as the shadows are of the stars not the whole block and are not square.
Any suggestions?

I remember seeing that technique in Patti Anderson’s EQ6 Pieced Drawing book. It involves shrinking, then copying and pasting a duplicate on top of the original (slightly offset). I’d look on pages 145-150 of her book.
You have to be careful when you’re doing this that you’re not pasting lines on top of one another or missing the spot where the shrunken patch should snap in the corner, etc.
