I learned about the concept of the value of “phi” from reading the DaVinci Code a few years ago. From that discovery, I became fascinated when someone on the InfoEQ mail list mentioned the Fibonacci gauge that is often used by woodworkers to determine perfect proportions. The gauge that I drew as an applique motif can actually be used to size to a perfect (golden) proportion using the value of phi (1.618). Because it can be used for much more than measurements relating to the Fibonacci number series, I call is a “phi caliper.”

The blocks are colored with palette add-ons for Grades in order to create an illusion of transparency.
