My daughter’s Father In Law passed in February 2021. He and her Mother In Law, Ruth, had been married 50 years and she was really struggling with his passing. My daughter thought a quilt, made from Orlando’s shirts, might help her with her grief. She asked if I could make a quilt for Ruth. The design was made on EQ, and several woven and knit fabric shirts were selected. In order to features photos of all Orlando’s children & grand children, the main block is 15 ½ inches square. The 5 ½” squares in the centre of each block really showcase the photos very well. To make the knit fabric behave like woven, Pellon 101 (Shape Flex) was fused to the back of the knit fabric. EQ Lawn fabric sheets were used to print the images on fabric using my ink jet printer. The ink was set and the photos feature beautifully in each block. Each photo features Orlando with his family. The background fabric is a Peppered Fabric, Sugar, by Pepper Cory and feels like feedback fabric. A perfect choice to unify all the different prints and colours of the shirts. Needless to say, the finished quilt, which measures a twin size, was a huge success. The label, features a photo of Orlando toasting Ruth with a glass of red wine. The label reads, “When you need a hug from Papi, wrap yourself in this quilt, made from his shirts, and his loving presence will make you feel warm and safe.”
