I designed this quilt for the November 2012 Electric Quilt monthly challenge, and liked the design so well I decided to actually make it. This is the base design that will later be appliqued with ocean shapes like fish, seahorses, and shells. It finishes at 72″x72″.

ocean Breeze by Denise Smart is beautiful. I am amazed that you can design bargello quilts with EQ7! I definitely want to try it.

Love the colours of this Bargello.
In answer to France’s question on how to quilt. I have done 2 with the diagonal lines suggested by Denise. This really makes the diagonals stand out but as soon as the quilt is pulled while under tension the quilting stitches popped as the bias stretched. I would suggest something with more of a white cap wave shape. Much harder to free hand quilt for me which is why I did the diagonals originally.

Great job. I love this Ocean Current Bargello quilt. I am so impressed that you design this in EQ. I have EQ7 and I know that took small time. Is the pattern (with instructions) available?
I would love to purchase it.

I’ve been going through EQ7 wondering at all the things I don’t know. I came across your beautiful bargello. I have one I made quite some time ago and haven’t finished for lack of quilting ideas for it. It’ a twin size quilt in masculine colors for my son who has grown old while waiting for it (me,too). Can you afford any guidance on quilting designs for bargellos? I would so appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

Hi France. Since your quilt is for a man I would recommend quilting straight lines that go diagonally from corner to corner through each piece of fabric that is the same color. This will result in long lines through the quilt that will emphasize the sense of movement and flow. Strong liner lines seem to appeal to most men, more than flowing circular lines. You won’t need to mark anything. Yeah. And you also won’t have to agonize over how the thread color doesn’t match, because you can co-ordinate your thread color to the color of fabric you are sewing. It is super simple to do with a walking foot on your domestic sewing machine, not so good to do on a machine frame. This is how I have quilted all but one of my bargellos. Here is a photo of one I did this way. http://tinyurl.com/mb377jb

To Denise Smart on your Ocean Current Bargello quilt, please repost this quilt after you have completed the applique work on it. I really love bargello quilts. I would love to see this again
when you have completed the quilt as you intended it to be in its final finished stage. Great job so far!

Wow! The Bargello can be tricky even when small. Your execution is wonderful.

Hi Denise: I love your quilt! If it wasn’t so beautiful, I think it would make me seasick!
I am teaching my adult ed classes a very, very easy bargello to get them use to the concept of how they are sewn. I lucked up on a “cheater” fabric that has the stripset printed already. For a laugh, I would like to do a simple one using this fabric — but still want the “bang.” Would you be willing to share your strip cut and crosscut sizes with me? I will share one of my patterns with you in exchange.
Thanks, Sylvia
