The Electric Quilt Company’s Story – How It All Began
We’re celebrating 30 years! Since the pearl is the traditional symbol for 30 years, we’re sharing EQ Pearls of Wisdom from our friends! See all Pearls of Wisdom posts. We hope you enjoy the tips and tricks you learn along the way and discover some new quilters or catch up with your favorites! Also, we’d love to hear about YOUR journey with EQ so feel free to tell us your story in the comments on any post! A big THANK YOU to all our customers for your support over the years. We’re looking forward to many more!
This week’s featured friend: Kerry Goulder!
Tell us a bit about yourself Kerry!
Hi everyone – My name is Kerry, but some people call me “Kid” (short for “Kid Giddy”). I’ve been sewing since I was little, but I really love all forms of art and creative endeavors, thanks to my retired art teacher mom. When my twin sister and I were little, we would sew clothes for our dolls, roam craft fairs, and make little clay pots that our mom would bake in an underground makeshift kiln. Drawing on skills from past art classes and learning new techniques, has helped me to fall in love with new crafts like metalsmithing and making enormous life size trees for my daughter’s theatre productions. I have two daughters at home (one is now 18 and going off to college this fall) and both are artistically driven and love creating as well. Sometimes they can be found in the studio with me, most recently making shorts for the summer.
When did you start using Electric Quilt and how has it changed your quilting life?
As soon as the MAC version of EQ was available in 2014, I downloaded the program and dove head first. At the time, I was focused heavily on creating 3 dimensional soft toys and dolls, but once I discovered the fun of paper piecing, I couldn’t stop. The ideas kept coming faster than I could design and sew. To this day I have a very long list of ideas I have yet to design. I also collaborate with others to create custom blocks and designs for their businesses, which is always fun because it’s a new challenge.
What is your EQ “Pearl of Wisdom” for EQ users?
I’ve been using the EQ program for years and I’m sure there are many undiscovered tricks and tools I have yet to find. My advice to new users is to just start. Use their books and learn from the beginning by following the tutorials. As a designer, I was happy to provide a tutorial for one of their EQ8 books and loved sharing what I know. What’s true for learning a new instrument is true for learning a new program. You can’t learn only by watching, you learn by watching, doing and practicing. If it feels difficult, keep trying. Start simple and build on the complexity over time. I have made some very complex blocks and quilts, and have yet to find something it can’t do. Having a program like EQ makes it truly exciting to be a designer. The sky’s the limit!
What are you up to now and what do you have coming up?
I just finished a super fun Carousel Horse Quilt that was inspired by some of my childhood memories. As an artist through and through, I have so much appreciation for the time, talent and love for Carousel artists. I also *really* love horses, so this quilt was an opportunity to cover both the memories of my childhood and the love of a unique genre of artists. Now that the Carousel Horse Quilt is finished, I’m focusing on teaching online classes, and a super fun, online sewing event, an Ugly Sweater Block Party that will be held July 24. You can register here! I am also gearing up to celebrate the release of my Puppy Portraits Aurifloss collection with a special monthly stitch along…and of course have many new EQ patterns in the works too.

I find color combinations in my garden and blocks just playing with EQ or graph paper. I love putting two blocks together and seeing the designs that show up when they are put together.

I fine inspiration for my quilts in floors, ceilings, architecture in general as well as pictures on the internet, the natural world around me and from the ships where I am lucky enough to see lots of places on this planet of ours.

I find inspiration in nature, especially as I hike in the Adirondack mountains. The combinations of greens (who ever imagined so many different hues and shades!) or coming across a beaver meadow filled with blooming wildflowers. Sunsets and sunrises or the changing colors on a lake all give me ideas.

I find inspiration with color combinations, in nature, clothes people are wearing, fabric designs, and in blocks, it amazes me to use different colors in blocks and come up with unexpected designs you don’t really see until you try different colors.

My very conservative and proper mom loved fabric and sewing so we were taken aback when she got the giggles over an article (sometime in the sixties) that declared “sewing is sexy:” it involves the sensual pleasures of touching and feeling. Her mom and sisters were hand quilters. Mom sewed garments so I am the quilter of my generation. I love using modern fabrics in traditional quilt blocks. I always find a delightful surprise in each project.

I find inspiration EVERYWHERE! Colors in nature, floors in historical buildings, magazines, from artists of all different media & genres…and, I love, love, love my Kelly Moore palette swatches to help with finding just the right colors when I am stuck. They gave it to me a couple of years ago when I was buying lots of paint for interior & exterior of my home…couldn’t do without it for all my different “me made” projects.

My inspiration comes from the touch of fabric and the constantly changing color combinations available in fabric bundles. I am a member of a number of online quilting groups and adore all the variations on patterns and color selections. Currently building my confidence to try some mystery quilt-alongs where I pick the fabrics.

Most of the quilts I make are for friends and family. I draw inspiration from them. I spend a lot of time thinking about the giftee before I design thinking about their favorite colors, if they are modern, traditional, landscape, etc. Is there a story to tell or feeling to evoke.

I recently purchased EQ8 but have been a bit intimidated by it all! I also started a small memory quilt business and am loving helping people have long lasting memories! I really want to use EQ8 with the designing process of the quilts!
Love the horse as I too am a horse lover!

As many here have said, EVERYWHERE! Floor and wall tiles, flowers, everyday household items, like books and baskets. But, the most creative come from friends and family. I love when someone tells me they want something. Not necessarily a specific quilt, but something I can get an idea to make a quilt from…like a trip to an island, a pet, or a wish for a woodland behind their home. Maybe they can’t grow one, but I can make one. I see quilts everywhere.

One of my first baby quilts in 1971 was Carousel horse. The time in life where you had to have one inch grid to design your own from 3″ pattern given in the baby patterns book I purchased. Sure glad I have EQ8 to design and make just about any idea in my head.

I am fortunate to live in Hawaii. I find the colorful tropical foliage, the water, the sky, the birds, the breezes moving the gorgeous foliage, the look, feel, and smell of the rain, the ever changing colors during the day, the fragrances in the breezes…it all inspires me every day. I found my paradise and feel I’m such a minute particle in this vast beauty. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude every day.

I am drawn to repetitive patterns. I have found interesting and inspiring patterns from the sidewalks Bangkok, architectural features I found in Kuala Lumpur and even park benches here in Salt Lake City. I love finding patterns in nature such as the wood grain in the exposed roots crossing the trail in the Olympic National Forest or patterns in the sand near Port Townsend. These are all patterns I’ve seen recently. I’m always on the lookout.

I find fences as great inspiration. My favorites are wrought iron gated fences but wooden fences and stone fences are just as interesting. I love EQ for allowing me to set my inspiration in visual form and it allows me to tweak and embellish as I desire.

Like many others, I look up (ceilings), down (tile designs), and around (wallpaper) for inspiration. I’ve also found inspiration from kleenex boxes, napkins & paper plates. So now, my bulletin board is completely covered with all this “stuff” to look at in order for ideas to percolate into my brain for resulting quilt ideas. So much fun!

I find my inspiration by challenges given to me, then I draw ideas in my mind and then I put it in EQ. I haven’t made many my first was butterflies for my mom. I had a pattern for a butterfly so I had to create the layout at that time I used EQ7 which they only had for the PC. I am a MAC user so when EQ8 came out for the MAC I went for it. I am still working on my 100 day challenge which were blocks of fishes. I’ve created the layout in EQ8 and still working on it.

Believe it or not, I find inspiration in my dreams … often repeated! I am sure that the images are recalled instances and scenarios that I have seen firsthand when I was awake. I have often risen from my bed at an ungodly hour and turned on my computer. Sometimes, when I check in the next day, it is nonsense. Other times, it is a beginning of a new quilt.
