So I was flipping through some magazines and came across this beauty, Interlocking Stars by Diane Nagle. It was in the Love of Quilting Jan/Feb 2011 issue… and not only was it in it… it was the cover quilt!
Wow. What an amazingly colorful and intricate quilt.
When I read further I couldn’t believe how easy Diane had made the quilt to piece. You should see how easy the blocks are!
I wrote Diane to ask her if she had designed it in our software and she said: “You are always more than welcome to blog about any of my published quilts, because so far they are ALL designed in EQ7. With Interlocking Stars, I used blocks in EQ and simplified them a bit for less piecing. I’m always altering a block in one way or another.”
I loved the quilt so much I mocked it up in EQ, fiddled with the borders, and then tried out the Random Recolor tool to see how it would look in a different colorway.
The very talented, Diane, also teaches classes on EQ. There is a beginner quilt design session including printing and images, and a second set of classes on designing blocks only, at the local quilt shop in Henderson, NV, called Quiltique. Each session of classes consists of 3 days for 3 hours each.
Congratulations Diane on making the cover! Your quilt is quite spectacular.

I want to contact Diane Nagle to send her a picture of the interlocking stars quilt that she designed, and I made. I added to the design to enlarge the quilt to create a total of 48 squares (twin size) for my granddaughters graduation quilt. It was a difficult quilt to make but rated as intermediate! I am an experienced quilter, it was difficult. It also took many many hours to cut out the pieces (about 1500). Weeks at at the dining room table. Many many hours to cut it out and each square took time. The connecting sq took at least 1 hour to sew and the star sq at least 1 1/2 hours to sew. The result are fabulous.

What a beautiful write up on my Interlocking Stars quilt! Thank you so much for sharing this quilt with everyone! Joanie did write to me and her quilt came out just beautiful! I guess I thought that because there was no Y piecing, or paper piecing that the level was intermediate! LOL! There is no doubt that it takes a while to put together, but hopefully the results are well worth the effort. Thanks again so much for all your kind words!

Am very interested in trying the “Interlocking Stars” quilt designed by you and shown on our WI PBS program of Love of Quilting by Fons & Porter. I have located the website for Bear Essentials fabric collections, but am unable to locate the Pen & Ink website for the other quilt fabrics. Can you supply the website or refer me to find the fabrics at any other location.

I loved the quilt so much that i’ve made TWO QUEEN-SIZED quilts. I over-estimated how many blocks needed to make a queen-size quilt. So, I ended up with an extra 40 blocks. So, I made the rest of the needed block to make ANOTHER queen-size quilt. Now, I’m going to give one to each of my boys for Christmas. I love the quilts so much, that I’m starting to miss them already. I’m even thinking about making a THIRD quilt just for myself. LOVE IT!
