Designed for the clubEQ challenge for December, 2014: Flying Geese! The 2016 New Quilts from an Old Pattern contest at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah is “Flying Geese.” This is a good time to get a head-start on taking up the challenge, since the quilt won’t be due until November 1, 2015.

This quilt design came from a distortion of the Prairie Queen traditional block. I was playing with one quarter of the block and fitting it into a quilt plus borders and discovered this design that looked at first like a flying duck. With some careful coloring and an addition of a stripe on the tail, I made the “duck” look like a flying Canadian goose. The Flying Geese border brings the piece back to the traditional with a look tot the innovative.
