August ClubEQ Challenge

Posted 08-04-2009 by Electric Quilt | Posted in: Uncategorized

The new ClubEQ challenge is up and ready for your entries. This one is great because you can design any quilt you like… you just need to pick fun fabrics that work well with rotate or fussy cut. Think border prints & geometrics & focal prints. Challenge: Rotate and Fussy Cut! Design a quilt to show off fabrics that you can rotate and fussy cut. Use add-on tools for the quilt worktable Design Toolbar to rotate the fabric by varying degrees and fussy cut to position fabric motifs in a special arrangement. IMPORTANT: Please let us know if you use inches or centimeters to design your quilts this month. It will affect the scaling of the design when we go to put it in the Album. You can add “in” or “cm” to your project name and/or put it in the email to let us know. Due Date: Monday, August

Sue Spargo's work featured in magazine

Posted 07-30-2009 by Electric Quilt | Posted in: Uncategorized

We’ve worked with Sue Spargo before and she is the nicest, sweetest lady… a joy to work with. There is an article about her work in the October issue of American Patchwork and Quilting (pages 17-20). Sue calls her work “contemporary folk art” and that seems very fitting. Her quilts often have birds, bees and flowers in bright wools with beads and lots of hand stitching. The results are a little funky, sometimes whimsical, but always wonderful. And, check out her sewing room… who’s jealous? You can see more of her work at her website www.suespargo.com and in her EQ program Folk-Art Dreams.

Barbara Gorby's Poppies

Posted 07-30-2009 by Electric Quilt | Posted in: Uncategorized

Back in March, the Kaleidoscope lesson of the month was about making the cover quilt: “A Congregation of Poppies.” That next month we were honored to have that quilt in Quilters Newsletter. Well, Barbara Gorby made a poppy quilt following our directions and it turned out stunning. Check it out: Here’s what Barbara says: I really enjoyed making this. It was my first project using electric quilt and the kaleidoscope collection. I have 24 more wedges to make plus cut all of my black pieces for the mystery quilt. So I am on the final count down. Then comes the fun of putting it together and deciding on a border. As you can see in the picture I just sent you, I used a lot of stippling in the background. It was also my first attempt at free motion. I started small so I had to finish it all using the small stippling and then the

Last chance to submit a ClubEQ Quilt for July

Posted 07-30-2009 by Electric Quilt | Posted in: Uncategorized

Have you sent in your ClubEQ quilt yet? We’ll take them all the way until Sunday night. On Monday morning we’ll start making the Albums page and display all the “Diamonds are Forever” quilts. To participate in the July Challenge: 1. Start a new EQ project. 2. Name it after yourself (200907YourName.PJ6). 3. Design up to 2 quilts with diamonds – diamond patches, diamond blocks, diamond appliqués, or whatever else sparkles in your creative mind. 4. Label the quilts on their notecards in the Sketchbook. (Give them a title and a story.) 5. Email this project to penny@electricquilt.com by Sunday night. Once the Album page is up, we’ll make .zip files of all the projects and email participants the “secret link” where they can download all the project files. http://www.electricquilt.com/Users/FunStuff/ClubEQ/ClubEQ.asp

Adventures with Andrea: Nebraska Day 2 – Class Time

In Lincoln? – check Got Laptop? – check Handouts? – check Brain? – I hope so I got up early and had breakfast with the quilting group. I thought to myself… this is a lot of people for 6:30am, but it didn’t really register. I grabbed my laptop, handouts, backup projector (in case I couldn’t figure the one out in the classroom), and EQ6 books and headed over to the South East Community College building where my classes were going to be held. Students started trickling in for the “EQ6 Basics” class and we got started around 8:00am. I asked them about their EQ skills and the majority had not used EQ6 at all. Thankfully everyone’s computers had EQ6 installed and activated and they were all on the opening screen waiting for me to start. We started quilt #1 I had planned: I talked about how to start a new

Adventures with Andrea: Nebraska Day 1

So I was recently asked to teach a series of classes for the Nebraska State Quilt Guild (NSQG). It was in Lincoln (I’d never been there before, let alone Nebraska). Penny had been there before. She told me to go to the museum if I had time. I was still slightly frazzled from checking my flight online to make sure everything was in order, and it asked me “are you ready for your trip to Chicago?” “Uh… no… I’m going to Lincoln, through Chicago…. where is the other half of my trip?” Luckily the flight had been rescheduled and not cancelled, so I fixed everything with a few days to spare. I focused on getting my classes ready and remembering that if I forgot to pack my laptop & handouts it wouldn’t be a very fun class for my students. I figured if I had time to do stuff on
