Out-of-the-Box Argyle

Posted 12-03-2009 by Sarah | Posted in: Uncategorized

In the Fall/Winter issue of Quilt Sampler (page 26) Diane Nagle’s Out-of-the-Box Argyle quilt has a fresh almost spring-like feel. The fabrics are fun and nontraditional adding to the somewhat quirky look. She usually designs quilts for Benartex, P&B Textiles, and Quilting Treasures and most of the quilts end up displayed at Market. Diane made the argyle quilt for a family run quilt shop in Nevada called Quiltique which is also featured in the magazine on page 20. (www.quiltique.com) Be sure to check out the shop you are ever in the area, it looks adorable. Diane says, “I use EQ for all my quilt designs… I like EQ because I can quickly change up an idea or colorway, and it saves so much time.  My job would be much more difficult without EQ. This quilt was designed using a variable point layout, with a simple 9 patch block and 1/2″ sashing.

Dandelion Wine Quilt

On page 85 of Quilter’s Home Oct/Nov issue you’ll see Helle-May Cheney’s Dandelion Wine quilt. What wonderful Fall colors it has, Dandelion Wine is a very appropriate name! Helle-May says, “I design nearly all my quilts with EQ6! I always kid my friends that it’s like my third hand!“ “I usually start designing a quilt with an inspiration block and go from there. In this case, the owners of Island Batik, for whom this quilt was made, really liked my Treasure Chestquilt. (Co-incidentally Treasure Chest was included on the Electric Quilt/Quilters Newsletter Best of 2007 CD and it too was designed with EQ6!)  The primary block in that quilt is essentially a 13.5″ 9-patch with bands of color that circle the block. I started designing Dandelion Wine by playing with the block design in EQ6. After deciding on a final block design and an alternate block, I placed then in my favorite quilt layout – On-point.  In the

Garden in the Round – an EQ6 designed quilt

Thumbing through American Quilter, Marla Whalen’s quilt Garden in the Round just jumped off the page! The bright colors on the block background catch your eye for sure. So I got in touch with her to find out more about how EQ6 helped her design this beautiful quilt: “Yes, the quilt was designed in EQ…it started in 5, but by the time it got made and finished it ended up in 6! Folks might be interested to know that EQ was quite a fabric-saver for this one! I hate to waste fabric anyway…but the bright pieces for this one were remnants, so I didn’t want to cut a lot of these odd shapes that I wouldn’t end up using. EQ let me figure out exactly what I wanted to put where, so I had no fabric wasted!“ ~ Marla Whalen Thanks for sharing, Marla!

Rise & Shine!

Seeing as it’s Black Friday I felt this Rise & Shine quilt by Daphne Greig seemed appropriate to start the day! Daphne has been an EQ user for a long time now and we love keeping up with everything she’s doing. We caught this quilt that was recently featured in McCalls magazine. We love it and thought it would help to wake you up on this day of early shopping. So we asked Daphne to tells us more about her design. Enjoy! “This quilt was designed in EQ! One of my recent Give & Take Appliqué patterns was based on a traditional New York Beauty style block. This is a fused appliqué method where one fused design is cut into a group of shapes and then the shapes are fused to two background blocks. It is a great way to get perfect points and smooth curves with no headaches! “So,
