Design & Discover – Braid Blocks and Quilts

This month we will be learning how to draw two different braid blocks. The lesson also covers some EasyDraw drawing basics. Let’s get started! Click Design a block from scratch Click Pieced Click EasyDraw In the Precision Bar set the following: Block Width: 6 Block Height: 6 Snaps Horizontal: 12 Snaps Vertical: 12 Graph Paper Cells: on Graph Paper Horizontal: 12 Graph Paper Vertical: 12 Snapping Options – Snap to grid points on worktable: on Snapping Options – Snap to nodes of drawing: on Snapping Options – Snap to lines and arcs of drawing: off Make sure the Line tool is selected Start drawing the block as shown. Draw all the V shapes first. Continue to draw as shown. You should have one grid dot in between all the points of the V’s. Draw in the lines to finish off the braid block. And then recolor them with threads from the EQ8 Thread Library (which contains over 4,000 thread colors – these threads are from 12 of the most popular thread manufacturers!)? An EQ8 feature you may not know about is Photo Patchwork quilts. The style of quilts made with this feature is sometimes called pixel quilts. There are not many steps to create a Photo Patchwork quilt in EQ8 but to get results you like you may need to do some experimenting and try out different options. The first quilt we are going to create is based on a block I drew in EQ8. You can use any image you would like. This month in Design & Discover we’re designing labels! It’s quick and easy to design a personalized label to document your quilt, or perfect if you are planning on giving your quilt as a gift. (Also, our Printable Fabric is great for labels!) * If you are on a Mac and running Catalina, an update is available for your EQ8. Some EQ8 users had issues with fonts after updating to Catalina. Therefore, prior to going through this lesson, you may want to update. Design & Discover – One Patch Quilts

There are lots of different styles of One Patch quilts. Each of these types can be edited…meaning the options are pretty endless! (Here is more information on how to edit the patch shapes.)  Also, it is helpful to know how the patches are counted. Now that you know the basics, let’s get started! Open EQ8 and click Design a quilt from scratch Click One Patch Click LAYOUT Under NUMBER OF UNITS enter: Horizontal – 12 Vertical – 20 Under Patch style enter Hexagons (H) Under FINISHED SIZE OF UNITS enter 5 Click the DESIGN tab Click Fabric Tools Click Paintbrush You can color each patch one at a time or you can also try using the Paintbrush Subtools. For example, the Oval Brush draws oval shapes on the worktable. All the patches your path touches will be colored. That can really speed things up. Once you have your quilt colored

Did you just get EQ8? Or, would you like a basic lesson on how to design a basic quilt? This quilt has a horizontal layout with elements placed on Layer 1, Layer 2, and Layer 3. Let’s get started! When you open EQ8 you will see this screen. Click Design a quilt from scratch In general the idea is to work on the tabs from left to right. You can always click back and forth between tabs to change things as you go along though. Under the first tab – NEW QUILT click Horizontal Now click the second tab – LAYOUT Under NUMBER OF BLOCKS make it Horizontal: 3 Vertical: 4 Under FINISHED SIZE OF BLOCKS make it Width: 9 Height: 9 Under FINISHED SIZE OF SASHING make it Width: 0 Height: 0 Now click the third tab – BORDERS Under Select a border style choose Long Horizontal Under Border

Borders can add so much to a quilt! We’ve covered using the Border tab and Auto Borders but these quilts are a little bit different. These are the two quilts we will be designing in this lesson.
