Welcome to our blog series, Do You EQ Too? Each month, we will spotlight a different EQ user and their quilts! If you haven’t already, you can read our introduction post here.

This month we are spotlighting Caroline Hadley! We came across Caroline on Instagram, where she shares her weekly “Sunday sketches” series. Each week she shares a new quilt design, as well as the variations she discovered along the way, to her blog and discusses the design process. Every quilt is beautifully dynamic and modern, and we look forward to seeing what ideas she comes up with each week! Read more about Caroline’s design journey below:

“I’ve been using Electric Quilt 8 since 2018,” says Caroline. “I used to design on a dot pad or graph paper, but playing with block rotation or placement was very time-consuming – I’d have to redraw the whole design each time I wanted to make a minor change. And I never designed with curves back then, because I can’t draw a decent curve and the wonkiness annoyed me too much. Also, exploring colour wasn’t really an option. EQ8 has helped me to expand my quilt design and making.”

“I post a quilt design every week on my blog and on Instagram – I call them my Sunday sketches. They started as a way for me to make creativity a habit and to improve my design skills. I’ve used the sketches to create quilt patterns for magazines, to make quilts for exhibitions, and even to work with other quilters. Paperdrop is a collaboration with Latifah Saafir, which we did as part of the launch for her new HuRTy 1 ruler.

“If you scroll back on my blog or Instagram feed over the years, you can see that I switched from pen and paper sketches to EQ8 designs in the middle of 2018 – a few months after I got the software and learned how to use it. I still use my dot pad and other methods to explore new ideas quickly, but I create most of my Sunday sketches in EQ8.”

“The software makes it much easier to iterate designs, too – I can make minor tweaks, like rotating or flipping blocks, alternating blocks, changing the colours. Often I’ll start with one idea in my head and end up with something very different – and much better – on the screen. I post all the iterations on my blog, so people can see how a small change can make a big difference when it comes to quilt design.”
