We’re celebrating 30 years! Since the pearl is the traditional symbol for 30 years, we’re sharing EQ Pearls of Wisdom from our friends! See all Pearls of Wisdom posts. We hope you enjoy the tips and tricks you learn along the way and discover some new quilters or catch up with your favorites! Also, we’d love to hear about YOUR journey with EQ so feel free to tell us your story in the comments on any post! A big THANK YOU to all our customers for your support over the years. We’re looking forward to many more!  :-D

This week’s featured friend: Sarah Maxwell!

Tell us a bit about yourself Sarah!

I’m a Marcus Fabrics designer, quilt teacher, author, and pattern designer. Finding ways to create a quilt design that looks complex but is achievable and easy excites me. Everyone has the potential to make a great quilt. My focus is on helping quilters uncover their hidden talents so they can be fearless in working with fabric.

When did you start using Electric Quilt and how has it changed your quilting life?

I’ve used Electric Quilt since it’s very first iteration.  Like so many quilters, once I learned the basic skills, I was intrigued with making projects “my way.”  But with limited time, it was just too hard to cut out multiple options to audition. EQ was such a game changer–being able to design a block and then try out fabric combinations on the screen opened up a whole new world. EQ allowed me to develop all the ideas floating around in my head in a way I could present to vendors and publishers. It’s definitely a key part of my professional quilting life. My quilt Swivel is a great example of how I used many tools in EQ to create an original quilt design.

What is your EQ “Pearl of Wisdom” for EQ users?

The Serendipity tool in EQ is one of the hidden treasures not everyone knows about.  Any time I’m stumped for a new idea, I spend some time just playing with that tool. Sometimes, the best design emerges from a totally random merge or flip of block elements.

What are you up to now and what do you have coming up?

I have two new fabric lines debuting in the summer of 2021 that will ship in early 2022.  Look for them at your local quilt shop or find them on my own site here. Take a class with me at International Quilt Festival in October, 2021 or really treat yourself and come for one of two week-long classes at Empty Spools in Asilomar, CA.  Later in 2022, I have numerous guild workshops booked throughout the Midwest, and I’m teaching on a cruise in late 2022. I’m so excited to finally have in-person events on the horizon again.
