Borders can add so much to a quilt! We’ve covered using the Border tab and Auto Borders but these quilts are a little bit different. These are the two quilts we will be designing in this lesson. If you’d like to skip to the scalloped border go to step #41.

    Height: 12
  4. Make the FINISHED SIZE OF SASHING
    Width: 0
    Height: 1

  5. Click the BORDERS tab
  6. Click the Add button two times or until you have three borders.

    Left: 1
    Top: 0
    Right: 1
    Bottom: 0
  8. Click on the second border and make it:
    Long Horizontal
    Left: 2
    Top: 0
    Right: 2
    Bottom: 0
  9. Click on the third border and make it:
    Long Horizontal
    Left: 1
    Top: 0
    Right: 1
    Bottom: 0

  10. Click the DESIGN tab > Block Tools > Set Block
I added the letters M, E, R and Y from 03 Foundation Pieced > Alphabet Ribbon but you can use whatever blocks you would like. (I did edit the R and Y a little.)
  11. Place your blocks as desired.
Next we are going to draw a block to use as our pointed ends.
  12. Click Block Worktable > New Block > Applique > Motif
Remember the center of the quilt is 12 inches, with a 1 inch border on each side, then a 2 inch border on each side then another 1 inch border on each side. So, for our triangle piece we want a 1 inch strip, 2 inch strip, 1 inch strip, a 12 inch triangle, 1 inch strip, 2 inch strip, 1 inch strip…so that it will match up with the quilt perfectly. 1+2+1+12+1+2+1=20 So, we will make our block 20 x 20.
  13. Set up your block as shown below. Notice again that the block is 20 x 20.
  14. Click Drawing Tools > Draw > Line tool
  15. Draw the first piece as shown. It is 1 inch at the bottom to match our 1-inch first border.
  16. Continue drawing. Each shape will need to have four sides. Your piece should be cream colored when you are done drawing it. If it isn’t, check to make sure your Hide/Show Auto Fill on closed patches button is on.
Notice the second shape is 2 inches at the bottom because the second border is two inches. The third shape is one inch at the bottom because the third border is 1 inch.

  17. Select all by pressing Ctrl + A or Command + A on your keyboard.
  18. Click Clone
  19. Click Flip Left to Right and move the pieces into the correct spot.
  20. Draw the center triangle
  21. Click Add to Project Sketchbook . If you haven’t named your project yet, EQ8 will prompt you to do so. (To be saved, your item needs to be in the Sketchbook AND your project needs to be named. Here is more information.)
  22. Click Quilt Worktable > Block Tools > Set Block > Motifs
  23. Click the Layer 2 tab at the bottom of the screen.
  24. Drag the block onto the quilt. Don’t worry about size or placement yet.
  25. Click the Rotate tool and click on the block until it is pointing down.
  26. Click Adjust
  27. Click on the block and drag it into the correct spot.
  28. Change the block size to 20 x 14.
  29. Click the Fit to Worktable button to see the quilt on the screen, if needed.
  30. Repeat steps 24-29 to place the top triangle, pointing up.
  31. Click Add to Project Sketchbook
  32. Click Fabric Tools > Paintbrush to recolor.
  33. Don’t forget to click on Layer 2 to color the top and bottom points.Anything you place on Layer 1 will need to be colored on Layer 1. Anything placed on Layer 2 will need to be colored on Layer 2. You will probably need to switch back and forth from Layer 1 to Layer 2 to get it exactly the way you want.
  34. Click Add to Project Sketchbook
  35. On Layer 2, click Text Tools > Set Text
  36. Hold down the SHIFT key on your keyboard and drag out a box.
  37. Type the word “be”.
  38. Experiment with different fonts and sizes until you get something you like. Here is more information on how the Set Text tool works.
  39. Click on Fabric Tools > Paintbrush to change the color of the text. Remember the text is on Layer 2, so you’ll need to be on Layer 2 to recolor.
  40. When you are happy with your results click Add to Project Sketchbook
