I used EQ 6 and really loved the blocks I could create. My computer hard drive crashed and I lost everything. It has been two years since that happened. Seriously I have mourned the loss of many quilt designs I had. Now I did back up some, but I am afraid to put them into my new computer because I’m afraid of infecting my new software. What my question is…….. Should I buy the new EQ7 and put it to work and if I get my EQ 6 designs will they work with EQ7 ?

Lauraly,
I never used EQ6 – I started with EQ7. It is wonderful! So much so, I now teach it.
I have talked to users of EQ6, who now use EQ7. Their opinion is pretty much the same: EQ7 is a great improvement over EQ6.
To answer your question: Yes, the designs created in EQ6 will work in EQ7. All you need to do is the following, in Windows 7:
1. Launch EQ7.
2. Close the Tip of the Day.
3. Click on the Open an existing project tab.
4. Since you will be working with a new version of the program, you won’t have any projects in it yet. Therefore, the tab won’t show any “Most recently used projects”, nor any existing projects.
5. At the bottom-left of the little window, click on the folder icon to the left of the message that states “Click here to open a project not listed above”.
6. Navigate to the folder where your *.PJ6 files are located.
7. At the bottom of the Open dialog box, in the last item called “Files of type:”, click on the item showing and select “Previous EQ Versions.
8. Click on the one you wish to open. The file suffix will be PJ^. For example, it will be something like “My Favorite color quilt.PJ6″.
9. After you click on one of the items created in E6, click the Open button at the bottom-right of the Open dialog box.
10. The item opens automatically in the Project Sketchbook.
11. I suggest you click on the Notecard button and add information to this item, as it will help you locate it when you do a Search of your quilts or blocks.
12. Close the Sketchbook dialog box.
13. I also suggest you now save this project. Doing this will save it in EQ7 format.
You are done. Enjoy EQ7!

Lauraly,
Al’s steps above are correct. You should be able to follow them to open your EQ6 Project Files (.PJ6) in EQ7.
As far as your virus concerns go, you should be safe to copy your EQ6 Project Files to your new computer. If you are concerned about your infecting your new computer with a virus, make sure you are running anti-virus on your new computer first and make sure it is up to date. If you are looking for a good free anti-virus, here are a couple I recommend that you could download and install:
