Pieced: Susan R. Polan

Judges’ comments: I love the intricacies of the pieced checkerboards in the borders and how they tie the various elements of the quilt together. I’d love to see this quilt made up!

Combination (pieced and appliqué): Jo Moury

Judges’ comments: Fantastic quilt and I especially enjoyed reading your plans for appliquéing and quilting it. The words in the border will be wonderful. I’ll look forward to seeing the “real” quilt in a show some day! It is sure to be a winner. The appliqué eagle is a wonderful tribute.

Because there were no entries for the Appliqué category, we asked the judges to choose their favorite quilt from the remaining entries.
Judges’ Choice: Darlene Gerber

Judges’ comments: Thank you for honoring  the men and women that protect us every day. This was one of my favorite quilts. I love the clean, crisp feel of the quilt and the lovely classic color scheme. The repetition of the same block in a smaller size for the border really turned out beautifully! I love this design as it’s one everyone can do.

A very big THANK YOU to our special guest judges Annie Unrein and Pat Sloan!

And a special thank you to Island Batik for working with us on this wonderful design challenge.
