The Benefits of Designing with Solid Colors in EQ7 from FeedDog

Posted 11-20-2012 by Sarah | Posted in: Lesson Spotlight

I’m Kevin Kosbab is a freelance writer and designer whose patterns for quilts and sewing projects appear in magazines including Stitch, American Patchwork and Quilting, and Quilter’s World. I produce modern patterns for creative quilters under the Feed Dog Designs label. Interweave released my video Secrets of Home Décor Sewing on DVD and as a download in June 2012. I”m currently working on my first quilting book, also with Interweave. I live in northern California with my partner and a handful of quadrupeds. Find out more on my blog or website. Like many quilters who lean to the modern side, I have lots of solid fabrics in my stash. I’ve also got a custom library full of them in EQ7. I know it sounds crazy—after all, solids of virtually any color are right there in the Colors tab of the Paintbrush palette. Bear with me: there are actually several reasons why a library of solid swatches isn’t as counterintuitive

Your Quilting Legacy

Do you ever think about how many things you make? If someone asked me I would say I don’t make too many things, currently. However, when I REALLY think about it, I’ve made two Halloween costumes (Luke Skywalker as x-wing pilot, and Princess Leia) and an infinity scarf in the last month. Still, no big deal. But even if you just make a few things here and there when you think about how many things you’ve made in you lifetime…wow. Brandy at Gluesticks recently made a book for her Grandma of all her old sewing projects. The book ended up being 275 pages. Phylameana lila Desy made a scrapbook for her mother with a similar theme. I wish I had enough photos of my grandma’s, or my mom’s, projects to make a book like that…Even photos of my own projects would be a good start! If you’re not already,

Photo Symmetries in EQ7

Posted 11-13-2012 by Jenny | Posted in: EQ News and Press

Have you played with the Photo Symmetry options on the EQ7 Image Worktable? Warning: It’s addictive! You can take an ordinary photo and make some amazing images, all within EQ7. Here’s a photo I took recently at the local pumpkin patch. Nothing particularly exciting about this photo, but it does have some nice colors. I imported my image into EQ7 and edited it to the Image Worktable. Then I clicked IMAGE > Apply Symmetries > Circular. Now the fun begins! In the Circular Symmetries dialog box there are many options to choose from, which means you can get lots and lots of cool images, all from the same photo. Hexagons are a popular shape now, so I’m going to choose Isosceles Triangle as my petal shape, and 6 as my number of petals. In the Circular Symmetries dialog box I can drag the petal shape around on my photo and

BlockBase Sew Along – Block 3 Link Up!

I hope everyone enjoyed making their #2448 blocks! I had the hardest time choosing fabrics for this block (most of which came from the Kaleidoscope collection by Deborah Edwards for Northcott). I love the transparency effect that the original BlockBase coloring shows and I tried to mimic it, but I think I might have missed the mark a bit. Ah well, live and learn! It’s a gorgeous block either way. I look forward to seeing how everyone else choose to color the block. To Link Up Your Photo Scroll down to the comment form at the end of this post. Fill in your info and make sure you select an image for your comment (this will be the photo of your block). If you have a blog, make sure to add your site too. Picture This by EQ’s Jenny Novinsky in Quilts and More Winter 2012

If you flip through the pages of the new winter issue of Quilts and More, you’ll be sure to notice this cute little face: That’s a quilt designed and made by me, featuring a photo of Sarah’s youngest daughter! The photo had been hanging on Sarah’s bulletin board here in the office for a while and I just knew I had to use it in a quilt. Using EQ7, I set to work on a design that would spotlight this adorable little face. It was a pretty easy task, as I think that smile would make any quilt look good! Once I had my design finalized I printed the photo on an EQ Printables fabric sheet and I was off and sewing! Visit allpeoplequilt.com and you can download the project file (.PJ7) for this quilt and make your own!
